Storm Overview

Helene is forecast to hit the Florida panhandle as a Category 3 hurricane by Thursday, with winds exceeding 111 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm is intensifying rapidly and could become one of the fastest-developing hurricanes in recent history. The NHC's latest advisory warns of life-threatening winds and storm surges along the coast.

Florida's Preparations

Governor Ron DeSantis expanded the state of emergency to 61 counties and urged residents to complete their storm preparations by early Thursday. Florida’s Comprehensive Emergency Management plan is in effect, allowing the state to mobilize resources for evacuation and rescue operations. Sandbags are being distributed in areas like Leon County to help residents guard against flooding.

Projected Path and Impact

The center of Helene is expected to reach the Gulf Coast late Thursday. While the storm's path could shift, it is expected to bring up to 12 inches of rain, flash flooding, and tornadoes across the Southeast. Before reaching the U.S., Helene will bring heavy rain to western Cuba, with the possibility of mudslides.

Federal Response

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation, and federal resources, including FEMA teams, have been deployed to assist with the response in Florida and Alabama. Search and rescue teams, generators, and supplies are ready to be dispatched to affected areas.

Residents Urged to Stay Vigilant

AccuWeather experts have warned that if the storm shifts west, areas like Tampa Bay could face significant storm surges. Officials are advising residents from Louisiana to Florida to prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions.

Stay tuned for updates as Helene continues to intensify.
